Comic Pricing Changes

Well, we hoped to ride out the weak dollar, but it isn’t getting any better. In fact, all signs point to it getting worse.

Why does the price of the dollar matter? We get all our books from Diamond Comics, which is located in the US. All prices are set in USD. All cover prices are listed in USD. We order everything 2 months in advance. 2 months ago, the USD cost 1.14 CAD. Today, it costs 1.21 CAD. This means that books that we ordered at one price now cost 6% more. 6% doesn’t seem like much, but it’s actually the equivalent of 10% in profit margin. Losing 10% in profit margin is huge.

So, we are going to have to implement another minor price increase to compensate for this. For as long as we can, our pricing will be as follows:

Cover Price:                                New Price:
2.99                                                    3.50
3.50                                                    4.00
3.99                                                    4.75
4.99                                                    5.99

Any other prices will be posted on the day of. We completely understand if this will change your subscriptions. As always, you can add or drop titles at any time, including the day the book is released. Just let us know!

Thanks, as always, for being such wonderful customers and understanding when we have to make tough decisions like this one!

Happy New Year! What’s Ahead for 2015?

Hey folks,

I thought I’d take some time out today to wish you all a Happy New Year and thank you for an amazing 2014. It brought lots of new faces to The Dragon: Hannah, Felix, Caleb, Kevin, Sandy, and of course, Darwin. We had the amazing Santa Claus Parade, featuring Canadian superheroes, with a Dragon dance party afterward. We had signings with Salgood Sam, Ken Lashley, and Ryan North. We were on Rogers cable with the Guelph Public Library, following the super-fun Paper Bag Princess day. We had our biggest Free Comic Book Day ever, as well as a host of gaming events throughout the year.

Here at The Dragon, we really do spend every day thinking about you, our customers, and making sure your needs are met. We listen to feedback, and incorporate it as best we can, as it fits into the overall picture for the business. The Dragon continues to be at the cutting edge of comics and games stores, and has been recognized as such with our Eisner Award. But, we’ll never rest on our laurels! We endeavour to make the store bigger and better every year, and 2015 is no exception.

We’ve packed our calendar with gaming events! We continue to run our weekly Magic events, Pokemon league, and miniature gaming day, plus we’ve been pleased to revive our weekly D&D Encounters game with Sandy as our DM on Wednesdays from 6:30-9pm.

We continue to host a monthly Star Trek Attack Wing tournament; our next one is January 25th. We are happy to announce a Sentinels of the Multiverse Game Day on January 10th, an X-Wing minis tournament on February 8th, and Netrunner on Mar.29th.

In addition to Magic Pre-Releases (Fate Reforged is January 17th-18th) and Game Days, we will also be hosting a PPTQ on January 11th, and GPT Toronto on March 15th. All of these events will boast the same high level of prizing for reasonable prices that you’ve come to expect from events at The Dragon.

We’ve increased and will continue to increase and develop our Pokemon and Magic selection and services: more sleeves, playmats, boxes, Magic singles. We are committed to making The Dragon THE place to play these games.

The Store Wars tournament circuit is back, and we’ll be running our first Warmachine tournament on March 14th. Visit for all the details.

And, there’ll be more coming, as we continue to develop the store as an amazing gaming space.

But… to everything there is a season. We have to follow current trends among our customers. As a result, we are reducing our commitment to Warhammer. We are currently selling miniatures at 40% off and will continue to do so indefinitely. We will continue to stock the books and the main games. We will also continue to stock the paints and such for now, but will be examining other paint options. We welcome your feedback on this. We will continue to order miniatures in on a special order basis. It’s been a tough decision to come to, but one that is based on looking at our sales, and seeing them decline rather dramatically from year to year. It is certainly a cautionary tale to pay where you play!

We are excited to turn that section over to a more full selection of Warmachine and Hordes miniatures, as that’s where we’ve seen growth over the last few years.

You can expect we’ll have some creator signings coming up! We are also going to be expanding the selection of comics by a bookshelf, as we reduce the manga selection. That’ll give us a better chance to display all the amazing books on the market right now, and it’ll make everything much easier to find!

We are also having a special promotion in January, involving $1 comics. Buy any of our $1 comics, and if you like the series, you can bring back that comic for 10% off the purchase of the trade paperback containing that issue. This is a great way to try out a new series!

We are also striving to make 2015 the year we never run out of bags and boards! But, if you know you’re going to want to buy a few hundred, just give us a heads up!

Look forward to our Bestsellers of 2014 list, as well as a customer favourites poll.

The big news on our horizon is that we’ll be expanding the store in March! We’ll be taking over the leasing office next to us, adding an additional 35% square footage to the store. This will allow us to provide an additional counter area dedicated to Magic packs and singles, and a 3rd register to help customers more effectively. It will give us more space to display T-Shirts and merchandise (of which we have a lot more after Christmas). We will gain more room for board games as well. It’s going to be awesome!!

We will be closing the Pop Up store this Sunday, January 4th, and beginning the process of integrating the two stores back together. Unfortunately, we will have to remove 2 of our gaming tables until the expansion in March, in order to fit in this copious amounts of merchandise. We will have tables set up out front on a regular basis to make up for the lost table space. We hope you’ll be patient with us, as this is only a temporary situation. We know we need more room for gaming, rather than less, and that will be a part of the vision for the expanded space.

We’re excited to have you all along for the ride with us as we enter 2015 with an updated vision for The Dragon. Thank you for your continued business and support.
